When Money's Tight, the Vacations Get Shorter
In light of the recession, many hotels, resorts, and travel agencies have begun offering waiving minimum-stay requirements and offering shorter vacations. Now, an inn and spa in Connecticut that required at least a four-night stay for almost $6,000 (meals and spa treatments included) can be visited for only one night at $400 per room, the Wall Street Journal reports. While that might still be too pricey for the average traveler, it is indicative of the movement by many in the travel industry to offer a cheap family vacation package that won't require an extended absence from home. Said one general manager, "In these times of stress people need to get away, but they can't afford to be away very long."

So if you've considered taking a cheap cruise vacation or a last-minute discount getaway but the costs of taking a few weeks off of work are too high, ask your travel agency or the hotel/resort where you'll be staying if they can arrange a shorter package for you. Until the economy makes a full recovery, most will be more than willing to work to meet your needs.
